Partnership enables low power silicon implementations of video and still image enhancement algorithms.

Hannover, Germany and Austin, Texas, January 26, 2016 – Videantis and Almalence today announced their partnership to bring higher quality image and video capture to the automotive, mobile, drones, and sports cameras markets. Almalence licenses image enhancement algorithms that increase resolution, improve low light sensitivity, and expand dynamic range. Videantis licenses low-power vision/video processor IP ideally suited to run such algorithms more efficiently in silicon, achieving up to 100x performance increase, and 1000x power reduction as compared to CPUs and GPUs. Together, the companies bring an optimized image enhancement solution to the market that is software upgradeable and ready to be integrated.

Hans-Joachim Stolberg, videantis CEO, said, “The next big increase in image quality will not come from new lenses or sensors, but from computational photography algorithms such as Almalence’s. Our customers are already experiencing the “wow” effect of the Almalence algorithms and we’re excited to bring their revolutionary software to the videantis processor architecture, enabling the low power and high performance levels that are needed to bring this technology to embedded camera devices.”

“As we started porting our algorithms to the videantis processor, we were impressed with the low power and high performance levels achievable. We can now run our most complex algorithms in higher resolutions and frame rates,” stated Eugene Panich, Almalence CEO. “It’s clear to us why several semiconductor companies have already adopted the videantis processor architecture for their visual processing needs.”

Both companies are members of the Embedded Vision Alliance, a key initiative that inspires and empowers product creators to incorporate visual intelligence into new products and applications. Jeff Bier, founder of the Embedded Vision Alliance, said, “By combining sophisticated image enhancement algorithms with low-cost, energy-efficient processors, Almalence and videantis are improving the ability of a wide range of devices to obtain better images.  Better images are not only more pleasing to the humane eye, but also enable embedded vision algorithms to extract more meaning from scenes.  This opens up exciting possibilities for new devices to offer enhanced functionality, responsiveness, and ease of use.”

Besides targeting mobile phones, the purpose for cooperation is to bring Almalence’s SuperSensor technology to the automotive semiconductor market.  This market has already adopted the low power videantis processor as the leading architecture for rear, surround, front, and in-car camera solutions. Since low light sensitivity and high dynamic range are crucial in automotive applications, the companies are expecting rapid adoption of the combined solution.
