Embedded Vision Alliance Member Meetings: Geekfests for Vision Technologists

This blog post was originally published at Auviz Systems' website. It is reprinted here with the permission of Auviz Systems.

I recently had a chance to spend a day with dozens of my favorite fellow embedded vision geeks. Once a quarter, the Embedded Vision Alliance holds a member meeting, where we spend the day networking and learning about new technologies and products. This one was hosted by Synopsys in their Mountain View, California headquarters, with 80 attendees from the 58 member companies.

The big news this time included the formation of a new Technology Advisory Board chaired by Dr. Sanjay Patel from the University of Illinois, Urbana. The Alliance is looking to more closely partner with the academic community and chose Dr. Patel because of his track record of commercializing research. Dr. Patel is also now the CEO of Personify. I spent some time chatting with him and asked him if machine learning might replace or eliminate the need for libraries like OpenCV. His response; "Not for 100 years, there is too much art and black magic in creating and customizing the algorithms for the applications." Since Auviz is in the business of providing optimized libraries, I found this statement reassuring.

I had dozens of these types of conversations throughout the day, and also learned about a hot new vision-based product for teenage girls that I think will be a big hit. I can't talk about it yet but will write about it in the future. If you are interested in attending one of these meetings, let me know and I'll see what I can do. The next member meeting is at Altera's headquarters in Santa Clara, California on December 9, 2015.
