Expand Your Computer Vision Skills with In-Depth Workshops at the Embedded Vision Summit

System and software developers who want to build their skills in practical computer vision implementation techniques will want to check out the in-depth workshops being presented on May 11th and 13th in Santa Clara, California, in conjunction with the May 12th Embedded Vision Summit. Details on three of the workshops, including online registration facilities, are currently published on the Alliance website. I'll discuss two of the workshops here; a near-future follow-up news article will cover the others.

"Implementing Computer Vision: A Technical Introduction," developed by BDTI in collaboration with the Khronos Group, is a workshop on algorithms, processors, sensors, tools, libraries, and standards for practical computer vision systems and applications. It provides an efficient launching pad for engineers, developers, and technical managers seeking to incorporate vision into next-generation products and applications. Attendees will get a practical introduction to key software and hardware components and APIs for vision-based application and system design. The workshop gives special attention to the popular OpenCV open-source software library, as well as the OpenCL parallel programming language and the new OpenVX API for vision application acceleration. It takes place on May 11th from 9 AM to 5 PM, and the $299 registration fee includes lunch.

Altera's "SDK for OpenCL for Embedded Vision Applications on FPGAs" is a hands-on workshop that will teach you how to use OpenCL to develop embedded vision applications on Altera FPGAs. This workshop will explore how the Altera SDK for OpenCL brings the FPGA to software programmers by abstracting away the traditional FPGA hardware development flow and providing a software-familiar flow that allows the FPGA to be prototyped in minutes. Topics include:

  • An overview of creating an OpenCL system
  • How to compile OpenCL programs onto Altera FPGA accelerators
  • How to run the OpenCL kernels on the FPGA
  • How to apply the various tools of the Altera SDK to optimize OpenCL kernels, and
  • An embedded vision application development flow

The Altera workshop runs from 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM on May 13th and registration costs $150.
