UC Berkeley's Professor Pieter Abbeel: The Embedded Vision Summit's Keynoter, And An Artificial Intelligence And Robotics Pioneer
February 22, 2013
If you've been up on the Embedded Vision Summit page over the past several days, you may have noticed that we've added information on the event's keynote (and keynoter). The keynote presentation on "Artificial Intelligence for Robotic Butlers and Surgeons" will be delivered by Professor Pieter Abbeel of the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Abeeel joined UC Berkeley's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences in the Fall of 2008, after having received both a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from KU Leuven (Belgium), followed by his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University.
Professor Abeel's section of the UC Berkeley website lists five primary research areas, many of which encompass embedded vision focuses (see his research page for much more info on each):
- Perception for Robotics
- Manipulation of Deformable Objects
- Robust Handling of Uncertainty in Robotic Control
- Machine Learning for Connectomics, and
- Apprenticeship Learning
The following sample videos from the set on Abbeel's website compellingly showcase the to-date outcomes of some of this research:
Personal Robotics: Perception for the Manipulation of Socks
And speaking of videos, you'll also find on his site a collection of his videorecorded conference talks. Abbeel's work has caught the eye of the mainstream media; the BBC, New York Times, MIT Technology Review, Discovery Channel, SmartPlanet and Wired, for example, along with a host of online press outlets and aggregators.
I'm very much looking forward to Professor Abbeel's presentation on Thursday morning, April 25 in San Jose, California, and I hope that after reading this brief summary of his work, you are too. I encourage you to reserve the time for the Embedded Vision Summit, a technical educational forum for engineers interested in incorporating visual intelligence into electronic systems and software, on your calendar. Specifically, I urge you to submit an online registration application now, while attendance spots are still available! For more information on the Embedded Vision Summit, please see the main event page. And if after doing so you have other questions, please contact us at summit@embedded-vision.com.
